This is our university, Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University (GXTCMU), in the picturesque southern part of China.
Founded in 1956 and with distinctive features of TCM and medicine of the minority areas, Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University is the only higher TCM institution in Guangxi with multifunctions by combining education, scientific research, medical treatment and pharmaceutical manufacture, covering the fields of medical science, pharmaceutical science, engineering and business management Nowadays, Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University has become the cradle of qualified TCM talents and the important base for education, scientific research and industrialization.
Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University is situated in Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, enjoying a reputation of “the Green City in China” for its picturesque subtropical landscape. At the junction of China Asean Free Trade Area and the pan-delta economic circle of the Pearl River, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is the only ethnic autonomous region that enjoys the advantages of coastline and borderline to the Asean countries, and a rich resource of medicinal plants and marine material medica. Nanning serves as the permanent venue where the annual China-Asean Exposition is held, which provides an important platform for the development of GXTCMU.
The campus covers 1760.3 mu, approximate 118 hectares. Approved by the Ministry of Education to admit students for higher education, GXTCMU is composed of 16 faculties, two teaching departments subordinate to the university, five affiliated hospitals (two directly affiliated, three in the local cities), one TCM school and one pharmaceutical factory. Currently the number of students is about 15,000, and the number of the staff is 2,800, among whom 635 are professional teachers, over 300 professors and associate professors, 272 tutors for graduates of master degree and six tutors for graduates of doctoral degree. D. 43.6% of the teachers have obtained master degree.
Taking the advantages of its multidiscipline and optimizing its programs for a better quality of education, the university offers 21 undergraduate programs, 9 vocational training programs, 22 graduate programs for master degree and 3 joint doctorial programs. It is also a higher institution approved by the Ministry of Education to admit overseas students, and so far about 600 overseas students, most of them from Asean countries, have been trained.
At present, there is one key discipline listed in the State Administration of TCM, five state key departments, two provincial key disciplines, three key disciplines listed in the Department of Public Health of Guangxi, ten key disciplines of the university level, two provincial key labs, one provincial project supported by the enterprises and one state drug base for clinical research.
In recent years, hundreds of items of scientific research have been passed through appraisal and won awards at different levels, including 23 items of state level, 218 of provincial or ministerial level and 242 of department level of the provincial government. Among these items seven items have been appraised as international advanced level, 24 as domestic advanced level and 26 provincial advanced level. More than 8,000 academic papers have been published in journals home and abroad, and 17 have been adopted by SCI. many of the scientific achievements have been applied by the enterprises in the production of commercially successful merchandise.
Characterized by the features of TCM and combination of TCM and western medicine, the five affiliated hospitals are ranked “AAA” level by the state with a total number of 4,000 beds. The university’s pharmaceutical factory has been titled as “China New High-Tec Enterprise”. The key product “Happy Hundred Years” enjoys reputations home and abroad. The affiliated hospitals the pharmaceutical factories, food and drug administrations serve the important bases for the practice of the students.
Based on the guideline of “preserving and developing the features of TCM, stepping forward on the way of modernization”, GXTCMU will firmly target on combining of education, scientific research and industrialization to meet the requirements and challenges of the “Three Golden Chances”, i.e. Great Development of the West of China, Nanning City Serving as the Permanent Venue for China Asean Exposition and Great Industrialization and Development of TCM in Guangxi. Carrying forward the advantages of geographic location and the dominant disciplines, advanced TCM talents will be trained for the Asean countries, and international cooperation will be enhanced to the other countries as well.
The 21st century calls for greater development of GXTCMU. By the joint efforts of all the staff and greater supports from all walks of the world, Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University will hopefully step forward to a higher level with greater reputation home and abroad, stronger combination of education, scientific research and industrialization, distinctive features of TCM and medicine of the minority areas.

FACULY OF PHARMACY
Faculty of Pharmacy (grown out of Department of Pharmacy) was founded in 1976. Today it has developed into a three-in-one educational entity combining teaching, scientific research and development together. In addition, it serves as the training center for licensing pharmacists and TCM pharmacists in Guangxi.
There are 6 departments, namely, Chinese Herbal Pharmacognostics, Chinese Herbal Chemistry, Chinese Herbal Pharmacology, Chinese Herbal Pharmaceuticals, Chinese Clinical Materia Medica and Basic Course Teaching Department, with 3 centers, namely, Center for Chinese Herbal Basics and New Herbal Medicines, Analysis and Testing Center and the Practical Teaching Management Center. There are 42 associate professors and professors, 4 doctorate degree instructors, 19 master’s degree instructors, and 7 experienced part-time professors and experts in the faculty at present. The Chinese Materia Medica subject is presently a Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region-level key subject and the central lab is the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region-level key lab. In addition, there are 2 bureau-level key subjects, namely Pharmacology and pharmaceutical analytics. The school is responsible for offering the courses of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Chinese Materia Medica, Pharmacology, Herbal Pharmacology and the Professional Basics of Chinese Materia Medica, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Chinese Clinical Materia Medica (7-year program), and Biological Pharmaceuticals to students. The school has a Beijing municipality-level key laboratory, an Internet Cooperation Web-Center for Chinese Herbal Modernization of the Ministry of Education, a Research Center for Chinese Herbal Pharmaceuticals and Key Technical Engineering Research Center for Innovation of New Drugs. In recent years, it assumes the responsibility for more than 50 research programs of all levels, such as the State “973”, “863” and the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Key Programs. It has been granted 11 state-level, provincial- and ministry-level technology advancement awards, and it has got 5 patents rights and 14 science and technology achievement transfers. It is in the lead of the country ’s research in the fields of Chinese herbal resources, evaluation of the compound material foundation of Chinese herbal medicines and their effects, digital Chinese herbs and Chinese herbal information research, new Chinese herbal medicament research, etc.
FACULTY OF No.1 CLINICAL MEDICINE
Faculty of No.1 Clinical Medicine (also named as the First Affiliated Hospital or Guangxi TCM Hospital) has experienced many times of changes in separations and amalgamations since 1941.
Now the hospital possesses an area of 59,300 square meters, with the construction area of 85,100 square meters. Six of the senior TCM doctors and specialists enjoy greater domestic fame. It has 21 professors and chief physicians, 107 associate professors and deputy-chief physicians, 630ward beds, 16 clinical disease sections, 21 clinical offices, 13 teaching and research groups, 53 specialized clinic rooms and 12 offices with different special functions. It also has 3 special medical centers, a branch hospital, a laser cosmetic center and a health center with unique TCM techniques. The hospital provides and ideal place for medical practice, clinical teaching, scientific research, preventive health care and rehabilitation. Awards at the national and provincial levels have been given to the hospital recently.
RuiKang FACULTY OF CLINICAL MEDICINE
RuiKang Faculty of Clinical Medicine(also named as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi TCM University or Guangxi Hospital of Integrated of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine) has a history of 50 years and is a comprehensive hospital combining medical practice, teaching, scientific research, diseases prevention and health care altogether. In 1997, it was appraised as the first rate of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Integrated Hospital in Guangxi.
The faculty has a total staff of 635, among which there are 92 with the senior professional titles, 251with intermediate professional titles and there are 14 advisors for doctoral or master’s degree. In order to improve the service for patients, the faculty has invested 32,000,000 Yuan in introducing advanced medical equipment and facilities.
FACULTY OF Traditional Chinese NURSING
Growing out of the Nursing’ School founded in 1975, the Faculty of Traditional Chinese Nursing was established in 1999. Nowadays, it is the only institution in Guangxi to provide nursing programs for students from secondary levels to undergraduate levels.
The faculty offers 7 different majors and specialties, such as TCM nursing, acupuncture and massage, home economics and so on to meet the students’ needs and the needs from communities. There are over 2,000 full-time students and 73 staff members with 82% having intermediate or higher professional titles.
The faculty has academic exchanges and good relations with Hong Kong, Macao and Thailand.
FACULTY OF CONTINUING STUDY
Continuing education in the university started in 1958. Through years of development, Faculty of Continuing Study (Adult Education) was formally founded in 1998. It provides degree or non-degree programs and pre-vocational education and continuing education with different specialties for adult students. Besides full-time programs, it also offers corresponding course programs, short-time training programs, in-service-training programs etc. for students. Now it has 3,750 students in 16 different majors. Many of the graduates have become the professional backbone in their organizations and some of them even succeeded in pursuing their masters or doctoral degrees.
FACULTY OF HIGHER VOCATIONAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION
The university began to enroll students for vocational and technological education in 1999. For better management and expansion of higher vocational and technological education, the faculty was set up by the university in February 2001. Now it provides 12 majors and to students, namely, medical cosmetics, higher nursing, computer in medical application and so forth. The faculty has 1,024 full-time students at school.
THE PHARMACEUTICAL FACTORY OF GUANGXI TCM UNIVERSITY
The Pharmaceutical Factory of Guangxi TCM University (Bai Nian Le Pharmaceutical Industry) was founded in 1971. Now it has developed into a state medium-sized enterprise and the enterprise for producing traditional Chinese patent medicine. It has been elected China New Hi-tech Enterprise, Guangxi Excellent Science and Technology Enterprise, and has been listed as one of the biggest 100 medicine-making industrial enterprises and one of the 500 biggest industrial enterprises in China and the largest university-run enterprise in Guangxi. The factory now has a total staff of 330, with 110 professional technicians, 3 with post-doctoral education background and 60 with higher or intermediate professional titles. The present fixed assets reach 41,000,000 RMB Yuan, the flowing funds 38,200,000 RMB Yuan and registered funds 11,150,000 RMB Yuan. The factory owns a modernized building with the workshops and the assembly lines, which can produce tablets, capsules, syrup and so on with the production scale amounting to 0.15 to 0.2 billion Yuan.
